CHALLENGING COACHEE SITUATIONS 3pm-4pm facilitated by Marina Shearer

Even the most experienced coach will encounter coaching conversations that feel difficult, complex or simply stuck.

What do you do when a coachee:

  • has plenty of insight but takes no action?

  • continually returns to the same problem?

  • resists challenge or becomes defensive?

  • expects you to provide the answers?

  • says very little—or talks so much that it is difficult to reach the real issue?

  • has been sent to coaching but does not genuinely want to participate?

  • presents a situation that may sit beyond the boundaries of coaching?

During this practical and interactive professional-development session, Marina will introduce a range of challenging coachee scenarios and techniques to help you respond with greater confidence and skill. Together, we will explore what may be happening beneath the presenting behaviour, how our own coaching tendencies can influence the conversation, and how to balance empathy and psychological safety with courageous challenge.

We will consider practical ways to:

  • recognise the patterns keeping a coachee stuck

  • explore resistance with curiosity rather than judgement

  • challenge without becoming confrontational or directive

  • avoid rescuing or working harder than the coachee

  • establish appropriate boundaries

  • turn insight into meaningful and sustainable action

  • recognise when coaching may no longer be the appropriate intervention

You will have opportunities to discuss realistic scenarios with other professional coaches, consider different approaches and add new questions and techniques to your coaching toolkit.

Come prepared to reflect, contribute and explore the situations that test us and ultimately help us become more thoughtful, courageous and effective coaches.

MOJO MOTIVATION 4pm-5pm facilitated by Dave Cordery

Once a client gains clarity over what he or she needs to do to change their situation, why is it that they struggle to do what is necessary?

Oftentimes, the answer has got something to do with their quality of Motivation.

Blanchard Director and Leadership Coach, Dave Cordery will introduce Motivation as a skill that can be learned and developed. During this hour he will discuss why some approaches are like motivational junk food, seeming to fill the gap in the moment but leading to less desirable outcomes.  He will show you Susan Fowler’s Spectrum of Motivation Model and talk to the three Psychological Needs that are required for optimal motivation and the Self-Regulation strategies that power it. Coaches will learn how they can access a powerful e-learning module for themselves and their clients to spark their motivation.
